Shinzo Abe

The longest-serving prime minister in Japan's history. His assassination in July 2022, by a gunman who blamed the Unification Church for his family's ruin through his mother's donations to it, turned the church's fundraising practices in Japan into a national issue and set in motion the government scrutiny that led to the dissolution order.

Abe was shot and killed while campaigning in Nara in July 2022. The man arrested said he had targeted Abe because of the former prime minister's perceived ties to the Unification Church, which the man blamed for bankrupting his family through his mother's donations. The killing forced the church's decades-old fundraising practices in Japan, and the web of ties between the church and the governing Liberal Democratic Party, into public view, and led directly to the consumer-affairs investigations and the dissolution proceeding.
